Description
The congress covered a wide range of topics in medicine and biology, such as progress in ultrasonic diagnosis and treatment; ultrasonics and education in Asia; and the physical and engineering aspects of ultrasound. The fruits of this congress will no doubt serve to advance medical research in Asia while promoting applications in the field of veterinary and livestock diagnosis and treatment. The meetings covered many topics of ultrasonics in medicine:: the history of real time ultrasound, echographic examination in microgravity, ultrasound safety; an update, clinical usefulness of fetal echocardiography, quantitative diagnosis using ultrasound, challenging technology, basics and clinics of the contrast imaging, elasticity imaging, analysis of the ultrasound images, animal ultrasonography, bioeffect and safety of ultrasound and advances in sonodynamic therapy.

  • Preface.

    Special lecture in AFSUMB 2004.

The history of real time ultrasound (J.C. Somer).

    Challenging technology.

Ubiquitous ultrasound imaging (Juin-Jet Hwang). An overview of bone sonometry (P. Laugier). Focusing applicator for SoFT: thermal therapy using fibres (T. Moriya, Y. Tanahashi). A dream for realization of high-speed 3D volume image by lens focused method (I. Kaihou).

Basics and clinics of the contrast imaging.

Physical properties of ultrasound contrast agents (N. Kudo, K. Yamamoto). Update of ultrasound contrast imaging (N. Kamiyama).

    Elasticity imaging.

Recent progress of ultrasound elasticity imaging technology (T. Shiina et al.). Elasticity imaging of atheroma with transcutaneous ultrasound both in longitudinal-axis and short-axis planes (H. Kanai, H. Hasegawa, N. Nakagawa). Usefulness of ultrasonic strain measurement-based mechanical properties imaging technique - toward realization of combined rapid diagnosis/treatment (C. Sumi et al.). Ultrasound elastomicroscopy using water beam indentation: preliminary study (M.H. Lu, Y.P. Zheng, Q.H. Huang).

    Analysis of the ultrasound images.

Investigation of blood under pulsatile flow using ultrasound imaging (D.-G. Paeng, M.J. Choi, K.K. Shung). Analysis of ultrasonography (W. Yi, W. Yong, Z. Baoping). Basic ultrasonic characteristics of atherosclerosis measured by intravascular ultrasound and acoustic microscopy (Y. Saijo et al.).

    Bioeffect and safety of ultrasound.

Ultrasound safety: overview and what we do need in daily clinics for a safe use of diagnostic ultrasound (M. Natori). Impact of bubbles on ultrasound safety (N. Kudo, K. Yamamoto). Biological effects of low intensity therapeutic ultrasound in vitro: the potentials for therapy and the implications on safety of diagnostic ultrasound (L.B. Feril Jr., T. Kondo). Comparison of platelet activation and hepatic cell damage of rats induced by two ultrasound contrast agents (K. Shigeta et al.). Does contrast ultrasonography damage liver cell? (A.E. Takada et al.).

    Advances in sonodynamic therapy.

Ultrasound therapy for stroke and regenerative medicine (K. Tachibana). Modification of plasmid DNA-based gene transfer into central nerve system (Y. Taniyama et al.). Sonodynamic approaches to tumor treatment (S. Umemura et al.). Clinical use of photodynamic therapy for patients with cancer (Y. Yamashita, Y. Kai, T. Shirakusa). The histological classification of rabbit liver treated with high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) - application of the new HIFU using phased array method (T. Ito et al.).

    Animal ultrasonography.

Technical problems with diagnostic echocardiography in veterinary medicine (Y. Uehara). Ultrasonographic evaluation of abdominal organs in veterinary medicine (H. Koyama). Evaluation of cardiac function and myocardial perfusion in small animals - capability of echocardiography (F. Ishikura et al.).
