The technique of electrical stimulation of the brain is used by many psychologists and physiologists to study the neural organization of behaviour-producing systems. Although the technique is not new, there is at present no up-to-date volume which systematically derives the methods of brain stimulation from fundamental principles. This book fills that gap and in addition discusses current brain stimulation issues and tactics. Physiological psychologists, neurophysiologists, andtheir graduate students will find this a valuable guide in the laboratory and in laboratory courses.
Brief history of brain stimulation; Stimulation and measurement; Spatial effects of electrical stimulation; Pathways mediating reward and circling; Summation; Refractory periods; Two-electrode stimulation of axon bundles; Future directions in cortical stimulation, including magnetic stimulation and transynaptic collision; Appendix I:: Paired-pulse stimulation of axon bundles:: fields of excitation; Appendix II:: Practical notes for brain stimulators; References; Index.
