Calcium channels are ion channels which display selective permeability to calcium ions and are sometimes synonymous as voltage-dependent calcium channels. In this book, the authors present research from across the globe in the study of the properties, functions and regulation of calcium channels. Topics discussed include the distribution of calcium channel Cav1.3 in the central nervous system; the signaling mechanisms of N-type and L-type calcium channels in cardiac hypertrophy and failure; voltage gated calcium channels in the developing vertebrate retina and subcellular calcium dynamics in femtoliter volumes based on the Gillepsie algorithm.
Preface; The Distribution of Calcium Channel Cav1.3 in the Central Nervous System & its Functions in Relation to Motor Control; The Distinct Signaling Mechanisms of N-Type & L-Type Calcium Channels in Cardiac Hypertrophy & Failure; The Role of Voltage Gated Calcium Channels in the Developing Vertebrate Retina; Unraveling the Multiple Functions of the a2/d Subunits of Calcium Channels; Mesoscopic Simulation of Subcellular Calcium Microdomains & Calcium-Regulated Calcium Channels; Calcium Channels; Functional Implications of C1v2.3 E/R-Type Voltage-Gated Calcium Channels; Activation Mechanisms of Store-Operated Calcium Channels in Human Neutrophils; Membrane Transport of Toxic Metals by Ionic Mimicry in Mammalian Cells:: Where Do Calcium Channels Fit In?; Index.
