Canine inherited diseases are important and are currently the focus of much attention, particularly from a welfare point of view. There is NO other text focussing on genetic aspects and prevention at this very practical level. Sue Guthries aim is to provide a user-friendly and fairly synoptic book on the known inherited diseases of the dog. The focus will be on the genetic basis for each of approximately 70 conditions, and practical advice will be given. Where health schemes and screening programmes are available, information will be given on how to submit dogs for screening etc.
The book will:: 1. increase awareness and recognition of disease 2. encourage the use of canine health schemes 3. educate all those involved in caring for/breeding dogs 4. minimise the incidence and impact of these important diseases on canine wellbeing 5. provide a concise guide at a suitable level
All chapters will include the following:: definition of disease; list of affected breeds; symptoms; diagnosis; treatment; mode of inheritance (including breeding advice; health scheme/screening if applicable); further reading (maximum of 5 articles/papers).
Sue is current Senior Medical Writer (OCC) and Chief Examiner for the national Veterinary Nursing Part II (final) Examinations (Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons).
