The role of nursing within mental health care haschanged and increased tremendously in recent years. With this greater role goes an increase in responsibility for our actions with clients. In our experience, the single greatest concern of clients is whether the interventions offered to them wouldbe effective in addressing their life problems, and when. Often in the past, lack of evidence has led to unsubstantiated advice on best clinical practice. This book marks a significant departure. The practice of evidence-based care is at least as much about avoiding harm through inaction or inappropriate action as it is about appropriate interventions. By enabling us to question practice, evidence can be used to empower patients by insisting on care which is based on evidence rather than simply custom and practice.
