The A.S.P.E.N. Pediatric Nutrition Support Core Curriculum

Written with an interdisciplinary, evidence-based approach, the second edition of The A.S.P.E.N. Pediatric Nutrition Support Core Curriculum provides a firm foundation of nutrition support knowledge for health professionals caring for infants and children. In the preface, Dr Corkins noted that this text was "designed to start with the basic nutrition physiology before progressing through the principles for nutrition in specific disease states. It ends with the 'nuts and bolts' for daily care." This core textbook features 37 chapters, each with learning objectives and 'Test Your Knowledge' review questions. The chapters are organized into four main sections:: Introductory and Basic Physiology::  covers macronutrients, micronutrients, fluids and electrolytes, the mechanics of intake, and digestion and absorption. Age-Specific Nutrition for Growth and Development :: provides considerations for human milk, infant formulas, complementary feeding, enteral formulas, and changes that occur with development. Obesity, lipid disorders and sports nutrition are also given a thorough review. Disease States and Nutrition :: delves into acute and chronic diseases of infants and children from birth, including topics as diverse as inborn errors of metabolism, eating disorders, food allergies, trauma and burns, and oncology. Nutrition Care of the Pediatric Patient :: a practical reference for nutrition assessment, route of feeding, ethical issues, and monitoring and evaluating patient responses to feeding.
